This was a really informative piece. Confirmed a lot of my evolving ideas on the larger political implications and my personal desires. Interesting to consider the Israeli position from the logical, objective viewpoint.
Assad is officially gone. Perhaps dead, perhaps not, but he will no longer rule over Syria.
Anyone who says they know for certainty how the coming weeks and months will play out, is being dishonest.
The IDF put out the following statement.
The IDF Spokesman has announced that "In light of the events in Syria and in accordance with the assessment of the situation and the possibility of armed men entering the buffer zone, the IDF has deployed forces in the buffer zone and at several points necessary for defense, in order to ensure the security of the Golan Heights settlements and the citizens of Israel."
"We will emphasize that the IDF does not intervene in the events taking place in Syria. The IDF will continue to act as long as necessary in order to preserve the buffer zone and protect the State of Israel and its citizens."
Another interesting analysis. Turkey has one of the largest armies in NATO and is geographically very significant to the Wests defense. As much as I dislike Turkey's stance toward Israel, giving them the boot from NATO would push them into the arms of our enemies and we are likely stuck with them for the foreseeable future.
I agree…Trump could use leverage against these outliers. There is more good will in Turkey, I’m sure, but the pressure should be put on Erdogan…He’s elected, and will lose sometime in the future. Trump can do some good for NATO, and the world….

Would love more history on the Maccabees!
